Oscar de la Renta. De la Renta got his start in fashion doing sketches for top Spanish fashion houses, which led him into an apprenticeship with Cristóbal Balenciaga. He later left Balenciaga to work as a couture assistant for Lanvin in Paris. In 1963, torn between job opportunities with Elizabeth Arden and Christian Dior, de la Renta took the advice of Vogue’s editor-in-chief, Diana Vreeland, and worked designing custom clothing for Arden for two years. In 1965, he left to work for Jane Derby and when she passed away a few months later, he took over the label and relaunched it under his own name.
